In the mid 1950’s, musician Jimmy Smith grew frustrated with playing club pianos and decided to try a new direction. In some of the lesser clubs he played, the pianos were often out of tune and riddled with broken keys. To remedy the situation, Smith bought a Hammond B3 organ and proceeded to essentially lock himself in a warehouse for a year.
The classic organ trio became the go-to of club owners in places like Harlem and Philly, creating the sound of four musicians for the price of three thanks to the organist playing the bass with his feet. The organ trio made its way into the rock world through ensembles like The Doors.
THE CLUB in Provincetown has their very own late model Hammond B3 in house, and the maiden voyage kicks off this Friday with a series of performances by JS and The Funk Wagon, a NYC ensemble led by drummer Joe Strasser. Joe will be joined by Kyle Kohler (Hammond B3), Al Street (guitar), and Justin Flynn (tenor saxophone). This classic funky Hammond organ quartet is guaranteed to have you dancing in your seat.
Friday: 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm
Saturday: 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm
Sunday: 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm
JS and The Funk Wagon will also be accompanying Vocalist Lezlie Harrison on Monday, July 1 at 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm.
