PROVINCETOWN — Twenty years ago on Feb. 10, fire shattered the calm of a mild winter night.

It ripped through the commercial district and drew hundreds of firefighters from as far away as Plymouth to save the town.

“I’ll never forget it,” Wendy Christern says about the inferno that destroyed the Whaler’s Wharf Mall, born 79 years before as the Provincetown Theatre, as well as the Handcrafter store next door and the Crown & Anchor Motel.
