PROVINCETOWN — A retreat from the water’s edge at Herring Cove Beach continues, given severe erosion in the last year.

At least 56 feet of the northernmost beachfront — from where cars park to what was once the top of a dune — has slipped away, said Karst Hoogeboom , maintenance head of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
