PROVINCETOWN — Frederico “Freddie” Rocha Jr. has died, family attorney Bruce Bierhans confirmed Tuesday.

Rocha was a fixture for decades in Provincetown, walking Commercial Street daily, often asking people for cigarettes or money. Born in Rhode Island, he spent most of his life at his parents’ home off Commercial Street. In September, 2018, however, he was evicted by his two siblings, who ran out of money to maintain the house.

Rocha gained wider attention after he was evicted as friends tried to find a stable home for him.

The Channel 5 Boston news program “Chronicle” aired a five-minute segment about Rocha on Dec. 6, 2018. At the end, reporter Anthony Everett said, “Freddy’s fans continue their fight to find him housing, convinced Provincetown will lose another piece of its soul if Freddy is shipped to a homeless shelter 50 miles away.”
