What is PIFF?

The Provincetown Film Festival (PIFF) is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to showcasing new achievements in independent film, and honoring the work of emerging as well as acclaimed directors, producers, and actors. PIFF is committed to serving communities often outside the mainstream, in the margins, or otherwise underserved, but have a voice critical to the evolution of artistic expression.

Now in its twenty-first successful year, PIFF has permanently established itself as the largest cultural event in lower Cape Cod, and Provincetown’s première cultural event, attracting 10,000 plus film-goers, movie buffs, and arts patrons. This five-day festival showcases over 100 American and international independent narrative, documentary, and animated features and shorts as well as panel discussions and special events.

What’s special this year?

Everything!  But in particular…

  • Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe will give the keynote speech at the Evan Lawson Filmmakers’ Brunch on the last day of the festival. “Seemingly overnight, Andrew McCabe, a career civil servant, became embroiled in a raging political machine that has transformed American politics,” notes Provincetown Film Society CEO Christine Walker. “McCabe’s story reveals the importance of truth tellers in an age in which the very concept of truth has been called into question.”
  • Judith Light will receive the festival’s Excellence in Acting Award. The two-time Tony Award-winner will attend the festival to accept the award on Saturday, June 15 in conversation at Provincetown Town Hall.
  • Yichi Chen will receive the Anthony Lawson LGBTQ Mentorship Award. Chen is a graduate student at Emerson College whose first film The Outsiders, depicting bullying among teenagers in school, was nominated for the Golden Harvest Awards in Taiwan.
  • John Waters will sign his new book, Mr. Know-It-All, on June 13 at Map. No one knows more about everything—especially everything rude, clever, and offensively compelling—than John Waters.
  • Jillian Bell will receive the Next Wave award. A spectacularly talented comedic actor and producer, she will discuss her illustrious career in comedy and her exciting upcoming projects in conversation with Vanity Fair chief film critic Richard Lawson.
  • John Cameron Mitchell will receive the Filmmaker On The Edge award, honoring his outstanding achievement, innovation, and vision continue to push the boundaries of the medium.
