Owner Timothy “Tim” Barry founded Tim’s Used Books in 1991 after experimenting with earlier bookstores in Sagamore Beach and Wareham. While strolling through Provincetown one afternoon, he discovered the tiny cottage tucked behind Commercial Street and knew it was the perfect home for his next bookstore. More than three decades later, that instinct has proven remarkably successful. The business was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1994, and Barry continues to own and operate the Provincetown shop today.

Before becoming a bookseller, Barry worked as a freelance food writer and later organized art exhibitions. His appreciation for literature and the arts shaped the bookstore into something more than a retail space. Rather than organizing books with corporate precision, Tim’s encourages browsing, conversation, and serendipity. Barry has even handled signed works by Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Mary Oliver, and rare editions by Elizabeth Bishop and Walt Whitman.

The building itself contributes enormously to the experience. Estimated to be more than 200 years old, the small cottage sits beneath mature trees, connected by a tiny bridge that feels worlds away from bustling Commercial Street. The secluded setting creates the sensation of stumbling upon a secret library hidden in the woods. Over the years, Barry expanded his business with additional bookstores in Hyannis, Wellfleet, and Northampton. While some locations eventually closed, the Provincetown shop has remained the heart of the operation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tim’s Used Books weathered the challenges that forced many independent bookstores to struggle, continuing to serve readers who valued the personal experience of discovering books in a real bookstore rather than through online algorithms.
