Scooping Up Tradition: The Story of Lewis Brothers Ice Cream

    August 24, 2025

On a warm Provincetown evening, the line at 310 Commercial Street tells its own tale: parents balancing cones, children wide-eyed at the promise of sprinkles, couples leaning into each other as the neon hums. At the heart of this nightly ritual is Lewis Brothers Homemade Ice Cream, a business that embodies both tradition and invention, one scoop at a time.

The story begins long before the first batch of ice cream was churned. The building itself once housed the New York Store, a general goods shop operated for nearly a century by the Lewis family. Run by Mark and Elizabeth Lewis and their sons Victor and Israel “Duffy” Lewis, it sold everything from rubber boots to ribbons. For Provincetown locals, the name Lewis became synonymous with reliability and community. When the store finally closed, the family’s presence remained anchored in the structure at 308–310 Commercial Street — a space destined for reinvention.

That reinvention came in the late 1990s, when the next generation of Lewises — brothers Alan and David — began experimenting with small-batch ice cream. In 1997, they started making handcrafted flavors daily, turning the family storefront into a parlor dedicated to frozen indulgence. By 1999, it officially bore the name still proudly painted on the glass: Lewis Brothers Homemade Ice Cream.

The brothers’ philosophy is simple but powerful: make everything on-site, every day. A chalkboard inside proclaims, “We make it here,” and visitors can taste the difference. From classic vanilla to adventurous ginger, every tub reflects freshness and care. “We never wanted to be just another scoop shop,” David explains. “It had to be ours, something we created from scratch.”

Creativity has always been part of Provincetown’s DNA, and Lewis Brothers leans into that spirit. Their menu includes cocktail-inspired flavors like Mudslide Chip (vodka, Kahlúa, Baileys, and chocolate chips) and White Russian, desserts that nod to the town’s playful nightlife. Alan swears by his personal favorite, Mint Chocolate Oreo — “I can eat lots and lots of it,” he laughs — while David delights in the bold Mudslide. Alongside these innovations sit beloved classics like pistachio, Oreo, and butter pecan, ensuring there’s something for every palate.

Step inside the shop, and the atmosphere itself feels timeless: checkered tile floors, Tiffany-style lamps, and an unpretentious charm that makes each visit as comforting as the first. On busy July nights, the line often spills onto Commercial Street, but few complain. Waiting for Lewis Brothers is as much a Provincetown tradition as walking the dunes or catching a drag show.

Their innovation doesn’t stop at flavors. The brothers also operate a solar-powered ice cream truck, an emissions-free way to bring their frozen creations to festivals and gatherings across Cape Cod. It’s a modern twist on the family’s entrepreneurial legacy — as forward-thinking as it is rooted in tradition.

For locals, Lewis Brothers represents continuity: a family name that has graced the same building for more than a century, now reinvented for a new era. For visitors, it’s a discovery worth repeating — creamy, fresh, and served with a smile.

In Provincetown, where history and creativity swirl together, Lewis Brothers Homemade Ice Cream remind us that sometimes the sweetest legacies are the ones you can taste.
