Bubala’s by the Bay: The End of a Provincetown Era

For more than three decades, Bubala’s By the Bay has occupied one of Provincetown’s most visible corners: 183–185 Commercial Street, where its bright yellow façade, sprawling patio, harbor backdrop, and steady stream of diners became part of the West End landscape. In 2026, however, Bubala’s is serving what is expected to be its final season, bringing an end to a restaurant with roots stretching deeper than its familiar yellow building suggests. More Story…

Provincetown History Snippets: What Happened to Billingsgate Island?

In the early 1800s, winters saw an average of two wrecks off the Outer Cape every month. Many sailors made it to shore—and then froze to death right on the beach. In 1872 an efficient lifesaving service was put into operation, with stations every five miles on the beach. Six or seven surfmen and a keeper lived in each station and kept a continuous lookout. At night, two men from each station walked the beach on patrol, met at a small half-way shelter between stations, and then returned on their same route. More Story…
