    Provincetown Art Galleries: The Stroll

    Provincetown Art Galleries
    May 12, 2021

Provincetown is America’s oldest continuously operating art colony. And there’s a lot of it to see! You’ll find art in the places you expect—museums and art galleries—but also in the places you might not expect, like Town Hall, Provincetown Public Library, guest houses, restaurants, even banks.

Summertime is prime gallery season, but this year continues to be different from other years. Some galleries prefer appointments for viewing, while all require social distancing for everyone’s safety. Check with ptowngallerystroll.com for up-to-date information.

Provincetown is home to over 45 galleries, a major regional art museum, and many other organizations that provide opportunities for artists including residencies and educational programs. Known as the oldest continual art colony in the US, the town and surrounding seashore have long been a favorite subject for painters and is a treasured place for creatives to meet and collaborate on ideas and to enjoy the beauty of the Outer Cape.

Provincetown’s small town feel and intimate scale have traditionally offered visitors the opportunity to visit many galleries and studios and even to meet some of the artists in a walkable area mostly on two main streets in its downtown. This year, over 30 art galleries are working together to bring awareness that Provincetown galleries are operating in safe, efficient, and evolving ways during the current health crisis.

The group’s broader mission is to foster a sense of community and mutual support among gallery owners, as well as explore strategies for promoting Provincetown as a thriving art and design community both today and into the future. Our immediate objective is to work collectively to bring awareness to art collectors and buyers that Provincetown galleries are open and accessible in safe and thoughtful ways during this current health crisis.

The Stroll’s website is at www.ptowngallerystroll.com for visitors, residents, and art lovers to find information including business hours, current live and linked content, how to visit each gallery in person, and how to make an appointment in advance. Information about logistics like parking, comfort and access is also available on the site.
