Keeping the Spotlight Bright: The Evolution of Provincetown CabaretFest

    June 1, 2026

Provincetown CabaretFest has become one of the most important celebrations of cabaret performance in New England, combining world-class entertainment with educational opportunities for artists and audiences alike. Since its founding at the turn of the millennium, the festival has evolved into a beloved Provincetown tradition, reflecting the town’s longstanding commitment to artistic expression, creativity, and live performance.

The festival was founded in 2000 by John O’Neil, a Boston-based cabaret performer, director, and educator whose vision was to create a gathering that would celebrate the unique art form of cabaret while providing training and mentorship for emerging artists. O’Neil understood that cabaret is more than singing songs; it is storytelling, interpretation, and the intimate connection between performer and audience. Under his leadership, Provincetown CabaretFest quickly established itself as a destination for performers and enthusiasts from across the country. O’Neil served as the festival’s founding director from 2000 through 2012, helping to build its reputation as both an educational intensive and a showcase for exceptional talent.

Following a brief hiatus, the festival entered a new era under the leadership of Patricia Fitzpatrick. A singer, educator, arts advocate, and longtime Provincetown tourism professional, Fitzpatrick assumed leadership in 2014 and revitalized the event. Drawing upon her extensive experience in both arts administration and performance, she expanded the festival’s reach while preserving its core mission. During her twelve-year tenure, Fitzpatrick brought nationally recognized performers, master teachers, and industry professionals to Provincetown. She strengthened educational programming, created opportunities for emerging artists, and fostered collaborations that extended beyond Cape Cod. Many productions and performers developed through the festival went on to appear in venues throughout the United States and abroad. Her impact on Provincetown CabaretFest was so significant that she was later honored as Producer Emeritus.

In 2026, the festival began another exciting chapter with the appointment of David Rhodes as Producing Artistic Director. An acclaimed actor, playwright, cabaret artist, and educator, Rhodes had previously participated in the festival as both a performer and master class instructor. His appointment marked a transition toward a new organizational structure, including the formation of Provincetown CabaretFest LLC and a partnership with the Boston Association of Cabaret Artists (BACA) as fiscal sponsor. Rhodes has emphasized building upon the strong foundation established by O’Neil and Fitzpatrick while expanding opportunities for future generations of cabaret artists.

Today, Provincetown CabaretFest continues to embody the spirit of the town that hosts it. Like Provincetown itself, the festival celebrates individuality, artistic risk-taking, and community. Through performances, workshops, master classes, and special events, it nurtures both seasoned professionals and aspiring performers. More than twenty-five years after its founding, Provincetown CabaretFest remains a vibrant cultural institution, honoring the rich traditions of cabaret while ensuring its future remains bright. Through the leadership of John O’Neil, Patricia Fitzpatrick, and David Rhodes, the festival has grown from an ambitious idea into a nationally recognized celebration of the cabaret arts.

In 2026, Provincetown CabaretFest presents: A Sentimental Journey Featuring The American Songbook of the 30’s 40’s. Shows, Master Classes, Workshops, Open MIC and an opportunity to gather together and share our love of music.
