1st Annual Outsiders Festival

From May 8-11, 2025, The 1st Annual Outsiders Festival features four days of art, theatre, salons, happenings, film, fashion, photography, poetry and dance as a celebration of us as a vibrant community of world-class performers and artists in every sense of the word.

On Thursday, May 8th at 7PM the festivities begin at the Provincetown Commons with “HERESY: A SCRAPBOOK OF REBELLION,” a tribute to the early godfather of the HAPPENING, nineteen-sixties gallerist, collagist, performance artist and provocateur, Al Hansen. The event is an immersive experience inspired by the legendary HCE (Here Comes Everybody), East End and Sun Galleries. The exhibit features the work of current local artists and is curated by the co-founders of the Modern Provincetown Collagist movement, Karen Cappotto and James Ryan.

On Friday, May 9, at 8PM, The Gifford House hosts the reading of Jackie Curtis’ “VAIN VICTORY: THE VICISSITUDES OF THE DAMNED,” the 1972 methamphetamine fueled trans-broadway spectacle.

The crown jewels of our premiere season include the kick-off of the 20 th anniversary year of SCREAM ALONG WITH BILLY at Provincetown Town Hall on Saturday, May 10 th at 7PM with an opening MOD Fashion extravaganza. The ultimate outsider, Shop Therapy’s Ronny Hazel, opens his Center Street home and his unparalleled vault of outsider art for VIP tours. Poets Harry Kemp and Grace Gouveia get their long overdue kudos at the Fine Arts Work Center. The ghost of 60s upstart Al Hansen haunts the Provincetown Commons. The Photography of Michael Koehler hangs at Spritus Pizza & Ice Cream.

In between lie one of Provincetown’s last independent entertainment complex, The Gifford House, with DJ THUNDERS. POSH. B. in the Porch Bar beginning at 10PM. This is the first of multiple events at the Gifford.. Friday & Saturday nights close at the Gifford’s Club Purgatory. On Friday, May 10, dance the night away with DJ EMERSON. On Saturday, it’s DJ THUNDERS. POSH. B. with the greatest 12” vinyl catalog this side of the Cape Cod Canal.

The festivities conclude on Sunday afternoon, May 11, 2025 at the Gifford House with the Tipsy Auction hosted by the iconic Provincetown artist, Joey Mars.
