Less than three weeks after his lover Kip died in 1944 in Manhattan, Tennessee Williams was back at Captain Jack’s Wharf. The fleet was in, the streets and beaches were crowded, but Williams resented them with their “Lord & Taylor t-shirts.” That summer he wrote to a friend, “The town is screaming with creatures, not all of whom are seagulls.” He hadn’t reserved his cabin at Captain Jack’s for the entire season, though, and was forced to spend most of the summer moving, staying in rooming houses and on friends’ sofas.

And then, in 1945, The Glass Menagerie opened in New York, and everything changed forever.
