    Camp Lightbulb is BACK!

    Camp Lightbulb Provincetown 2021
    June 30, 2021

Camp Lightbulb is BACK and having a fundraiser.

    Mimosas for Camp Lightbulb!

The pandemic hit everyone hard, but LGBTQ+ youth have had a particularly difficult year, isolated from peer groups, often quarantined in non-affirming environments, and without the opportunity to build any kind of community that could help them through. So ptownie is especially pleased to see the return this summer of Camp Lightbulb! Now in its 10th season in Provincetown, Camp Lightbulb is critically important to the healthy development of queer youth.

Founded in 2011, the organization chose Provincetown as its primary home because of the town’s vibrant multigenerational LGBTQ+ community. It affords campers the opportunity to live in a safe and positive space with a focus on personal exploration and development. (After camp, 92 percent of campers report feeling more connected, and 89 percent report growing in confidence!)

Camp is more critical this year than ever before. In 2020, Camp Lightbulb’s weekly virtual camps served over 200 campers, with 60 percent using donor-funded financial aid to attend. The camp expects 450 virtual campers and about 100 summer campers this year. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, summer camp will operate at 60 percent capacity, causing its revenue to decrease—while costs increase.

This Friday, July 3rd, Camp Lightbulb is hosting a Mimosas & Memories Made in Person event at the Harbor Lounge, 359 Commercial Street, from 11am to 1pm, with camp counselors in attendance as well as hosts from the organization and the Ptown community. Tickets are $50; go to mimosasandmemories.eventbrite.com.

It’s only a couple of hours out of your schedule—but could mean all the difference in the world to a kid who’s feeling isolated, alone, and possibly afraid. We’ve all been there. Help Camp Lightbulb do something about it!

Like many other progressives, I’m finding it difficult these days to be optimistic, much less at peace, about the state of the world and of the country I live in. Everywhere I look, cruelty is on display. (And what is it, anyway, about cruelty that it seems...
