    Rescue Service Drill Reenactment

    Rescue Service Drill Reenactment

Returning for the first time since the pandemic, the weekly Beach Apparatus Drill is back at the Old Harbor Life Saving Station!

Each Thursday at 5PM during July and August, visitors can step back in time to witness this historic reenactment as it was performed between 1812 and 1915.

Volunteers dress in period costume as 1902 ‘Surfmen’ to demonstrate a rescue at sea by breeches buoy, consisting of a pair of canvas breeches fastened inside a ring buoy and suspended from a life line and pulley system between the stranded ship and shore.

Surfmen fire a projectile from a small cannon using black powder. A 12-foot wooden crotch is erected on the shore to suspend the cable-tow and breeches buoy above the surf, carrying the shipwrecked victim to safety.

The demonstration lasts about one hour and is the only one of its kind in the United States.

Old Harbor Life Saving Station is located at Race Point Beach at the end of Race Point Road in the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Art We Love & Why – Landscape

For some people, “landscape painting” may conjure up an old-fashioned, sedate art form – something to put over the sofa. But every artist sees the world around us through a unique lens, and the landscapes here are anything but staid. They’re also a reminder of the enduring value of looking at the world through someone else’s eyes.
